Palliative nursing

For long-term treatment, palliative care plays a crucial role. Palliative care provides support to patients affected by the suffering; illnesses and complications of aging that improve their quality of life. Nursing helps people get the palliative treatment they deserve for long-term pain relief and a far better sense of well-being and health. Palliative care nurses make sure that patients adhere to their medication schedules and procedures by ensuring a transparent line of contact with the patient, physicians, and other relevant healthcare professionals. Most of the people need help to maneuver around, so a hospice nurse can help them manage to exercise so as to perform routine activities. They will hold and track devices and answer care needs like bathing and eating. Especially, nurses who provide palliative care make patients and their families feel safe and healthy.

According to WHO, every year, around 40 million people require palliative care, out of which 78% live in developing and underdeveloped countries. Only 14% people receive the palliative care they require. The need for palliative nursing is increasing, due to the rise in non-communicable diseases and the world’s ageing population. Sub-standard training and lack of awareness of palliative care is prevalent among nurses, the solutions and opportunities for which will be discussed in this session.
